Some important historical events which took place in the Islamic month of Muharram. This list mostly includes Dates of birth or demise of Islamic personalities.


* 01 Muharram: Start of the new Islamic year

* 01 Muharram 24 A.H: Martyrdom of Hazrat Sayyadna Umar Ibn Khattab (r.z.a), buried in Madina alongside the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

* 02 Muharram 200 A.H: Hazrat Khwaja Maroof Karkhi (r.a) passed away and was buried in Baghdad, Iraq

* 03 Muharram 239 A.H: Demise of Imam Ibn Abi Shayba (r.a), the teacher of both Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim

* 04 Muharram 24 A.H: Start of the Caliphate of Hazrat Sayyadna Uthman Ibn Affan (r.z.a)

* 05 Muharram 664 or 668 A.H: Demise of the famous Chishti Shaykh Hazrat Fariduddin Ganj-Shakar (r.a), buried in Pak Patan, Punjab, Pakistan

* 09 Muharram 1296 A.H: Demise of the Naqshbandi shaykh Hazrat Shah Abdul-Ghani Faruqi Mujaddidi, son of the famous Naqshbandi shaykh Hazrat Shah Ahmad Saeed Naqshbandi Mujaddidi (r.a), buried in Jannat-al-Baqi in Madina Munawwara.

* 10 Muharram: The blessed day of Ashura, on which Prophet Musa and his people were saved from the Pharaoh.

* 10 Muharram: The martyrdom of Sayyadna Imam Hussain (r.z.a) in Karbala, Iraq

* 10 Muharram 425 A.H: Demise of the great sufi saint Hazrat Shaykh Abul Hasan Kharqani (r.a), buried in Kharqan, Iran

* 10 Muharram 1195 A.H: Martyrdom of famous Naqshbandi shaykh Hazrat Mirza Mazhar Jan-e-Janan (r.a) who was martyred by a Rafdi (Shiite), buried in Delhi, India

* 11 Muharram 1301 A.H: Demise of Hazrat Shah Muhammad Mazhar Faruqi Mujaddidi, son of Shah Ahmad Saeed Naqshbandi Mujaddidi (r.a), buried near the grave of his father in Jannat-al-Baqi, Madinah Munawwara

* 13 Muharram 989 A.H: Demise of the famous Persian sufi poet and Naqshbandi shaykh Hadrat Mawlana Abdur-Rahman Jami (r.a), buried in Herat, Afghanistan

* 17 Muharram 1265 A.H: Demise of the famous Naqshbandi shaykh belonging to the Khalidi branch, Hadrat Shaykh Muhammad Effendi al-Yaraghi (r.a). He was one of the grandshaykhs of Shaykh Nazim Adil al-Haqqani

* 18 Muharram 95 A.H: Demise of Imam Zain al-Abideen (r.z.a), the great Imam and son of Hadrat Imam Hussain (r.a), buried in Madinah

* 19 Muharram 970 A.H: Demise of Hadrat Shaykh Durwesh Muhammad Naqshbandi (r.a), buried in Samarqand, Uzbekistan

* 21 Muharram 430 A.H: Demise of Allama Abu Naeem Ahmad Ibn Abdullah Asfahanai (r.a), author of Hilyat al-Awliya

* 29 Muharram 1176 A.H: Demise of the great scholar and sufi saint Hadrat Shah Waliullah Muhadith Dehlavi (r.a), buried in Delhi, India (date is disputed)

* 29 Muharram 1114 A.H: Demise of Shaykh Muhammad Hujjat-ullah Faruqi Mujaddidi (son of Hadrat Imam Muhammad Masum Faruqi) alias Naqshband Thani, who was the grandson of Mujaddid Alf Thani. Buried in Sirhind, India
